  NAHP Candidacy

The Certification process begins with Candidacy. All NAHP candidates must complete an Application for Candidacy and submit it to their local/regional AHMA. The Candidate must be submitted with a non-refundable application fee of $80, made payable to NAHMA. Each Candidate will be responsible for tracking his/her progress, and should keep originals of all documentation, including course completion certificates and verifications of experience. Candidacy is required before applying for Certification.

Each Candidate will have a maximum of three years to complete the requirements for certification. If all requirements are not completed, or the Application for Certification is not filed within the three year period, the individual must file a new Application for Candidacy, and remit another Application for Candidacy fee.

The year after the Application for Candidacy is filed, each candidate will be invoiced for a $50 Candidate Maintenance fee. This fee will be assessed until the Application for Certification is submitted or the three year Candidacy term expires, whichever comes first. Candidates will be eligible to receive the NAHP Report and other NAHMA publications. Payment of this fee will ensure that the Candidate remains on active and good standing while working towards their certification.

  Requirements for Certification

The NAHP certification is comprised of education and experience components. All criteria must be met before the Candidate can be certified.

Education:

The education component consists of successful completion of course work in the following areas: occupancy, fair housing and basic apartment management.

The accepted courses are:

  • NAHMA Certified Professional of Occupancy (CPO) **
  • NAHMA Fair Housing/Section 504 Compliance
  • National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Registered in Apartment Management (RAM) School

Candidates who have earned another apartments management industry certification prior to January 1, 1998 will be given credit towards the NAHP®¹ . All others must take and complete the NAHB RAM School².

** For candidates who specialize in Low Income Housing Tax Credit properties, we offer a NAHP® certification with a specialty in the area of Housing Credits. They must complete the NAHMA Housing Credit Workshop and must acquire the NAHMA/NAHB Housing Credit Certified Professional certification in lieu of the CPO.

Experience: All Candidates must accumulate a minimum of two years of experience in affordable housing functioning as a Site Manager, Assistant Manger, Occupancy Specialist, Leasing Consultant, or equivalent position(s) within the three year period immediately preceding application for NAHP® certification.

All work experience must be documented in the NAHP® Application for Certification. (Resume or similar documentation required.)

¹ CMH, ARM, and CAM are recognized.

² In circumstances where the NAHB RAM course is not available, the Candidate will need to request permission from NAHMA, in writing, to take one of the alternative courses to fulfill this requirement. The local/regional AHMA will need to verify that the RAM course is not available in their region.
